Small Beauties
Small Beauties is a collection of photographs and stories about plants, insects, and small details in nature around North Cape – a rich and often overlooked plant life that reveals itself when you take the time to look closer.
When many people think of North Cape and Magerøya, they imagine bare mountains, harsh weather, and a landscape where plant life is almost nonexistent. In reality, the natural environment here is far more diverse than its reputation suggests. The plant life is rich, but often low-growing, weather-shaped, and easy to miss if you only look toward the horizon. To truly discover it, you often have to get down to ground level.
This page is dedicated to those small subjects – plants clinging to the soil, flowers that bloom during short and intense summers, and insects that spend their entire lives in what for many appears to be nothing more than grass, moss, or roadside vegetation. Here, it is not the grand views that dominate, but details, structures, and quiet moments.
Photographing small beauties is largely about slowing down. It requires stopping, kneeling, and allowing your eyes to adjust to the details around you. Many of these subjects exist only for a brief period of time, changing quickly with weather, light, and season. That fleeting nature makes each encounter unique.
For me, this work is a natural extension of landscape photography. It is the same nature, shaped by the same light and weather, but seen from a different perspective. Small beauties are landscapes in miniature — full of form, structure, and life — yet often hidden from view unless you take the time to look closely.
The images and texts presented here are meant as a reminder that even the smallest elements of nature deserve attention. Not because they are rare or spectacular, but because they are an essential part of the whole.
