Birds & Wildlife – Moments in Silence
Since spring 2018, birds and wildlife have become a natural part of my photographic work.
I don’t seek the spectacular – I seek the quiet. The moments that happen when no one is watching. When a goose lands on the ice, a fox peeks its head from behind a rock, or a sea eagle rises into the sky like a small flame. It’s not the noise that matters – it’s the moment. The quiet connection between me and the living.
Here on Magerøya, in Nordkapp municipality, I meet life in its most untouched form. No trails, no people – only wind, water, and what moves in the shadow of the mountains. I’ve learned to wait. To breathe softly. To let time pass, just to capture that one moment – when the animal doesn’t flee, but looks at you. When the bird doesn’t fly away, but stands and gazes out over the sea, as if it knows you’re not a threat – but part of the landscape.
Bird safari at Gjesværstappan
Many of my seabird photos were taken on bird safaris around the Gjesværstappan bird reserve, west of Nordkapp – one of Northern Europe’s most impressive bird colonies. Here, over a million puffins circle the cliffs, alongside thousands of gulls, guillemots, kittiwakes, and sea eagles, while the sea crashes against the rocks below. This is not just a place to see birds – it’s a place to experience nature’s raw power, on a scale that cannot be described – only felt.
These images were not taken with 600mm zoom lenses – they were taken with respect. With patience. With understanding that nature doesn’t follow plans. It’s in these encounters that I find what cannot be described – only experienced. A raven circling over a cliff. A reindeer standing, staring into the horizon. Some seals resting on a skerry, enjoying life. A seabird resting on the ice, as if it has found peace in a world that never stills.
I don’t erase shadows, remove snow, or enhance colors. Because that’s not what matters – it’s the moment. The quiet connection between me and the living.
